Mitsubishi-Fuso Delivers 25 Canter Eco Hybrid Trucks to Australia

Mitsubishi-Fuso Truck & Bus Corporation (MFTBC) has accepted an order to deliver 25 Fuso Canter Eco Hybrid trucks to Australia by the end of March, which is the company’s largest delivery of hybrid trucks outside of Japan.  The receiver is Star Track Express, an express freight company that is headquartered in Gordon (near Sydney).  Late last year, Fuso delivered 15 hybrids to Ireland.

The Fuso Canter Eco Hybrid was launched in 2006 and has so far sold over 800 units in Japan, with sales rising as Mitsubishi takes the hybrids international.  The trucks are hybrid parallel diesel-electrics that combine a 3.0L, four cylinder diesel engine with a 35kW electric motor/generator.  The motor is separated from the engine by an automatic clutch, which disengages the engine from the drive line for all-electric mobility.  The system also uses a 1.96kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

The truck’s use of a particulate filter, developed by Daimler, traps particulate matter and exhaust gases for recirculation and, combined with the hybrid capability of the truck, reduces emissions by 41-46% in most applications.  All while increasing fuel efficiency by 20%.

The Canter Eco Hybrid has undergone small technological updates since its 2006 release, and the technology has been produced in buses as well.

MFTBC is a division of Daimler Trucks and Daimler AG.
