The infamous City of Burbank in California, home of Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show, is getting two hydrogen fuel cell transit buses for its local area public bus routes. The buses, made by Proterra in Colorado, are technically hybrid-electric fuel cell buses, using an electric power train and lithium titanate batteries combined with a hydrogen fuel cell for range extension.
The first bus arrived Wednesday (April 28) and will be on the road, rotating through Burbank’s four bus routes, shortly. The next bus will arrive sometime in June and enter service at that time. The buses have a range of 250 miles per hydrogen fill, can be fueled in just a few minutes, and emit only water from their tailpipes.
Burbank installed a hydrogen refueling station in 2006 and is currently employing five hydrogen-burning Toyota Prius conversions using hydrogen internal combustion instead of gasoline for the hybrids.
