LA Ports Get Electric Yard Jockeys From Balqon

Twenty new Nautilus XE20 drayage/yard jockeys appeared at the Port of Los Angeles on Wednesday and were put through familiarization tests with their drivers to start duty as cargo movers.   The trucks were purchased as part of the port operation’s Clean Air Action Plan (CAAP), designed to reduce diesel emissions at Southern California ports.

The trucks, Balqon Nautilus models, are the newer-generation utilizing lithium-ion batteries versus the test fleet of half a dozen trucks Balqon put into use at the ports two years ago.  These newer models have longer lifespans, more range, and better energy retention.  They also recharge about 15% faster than their lead-acid counterparts.

The 20 yard jockeys Balqon delivered are the first of a larger wave of the trucks, expected to replace all diesel truck operations inside the ports
