Smith Electric Vehicles Gets $22M Fed Grant, Plans to Expand Manufacturing Capabilities

Smith Electric Vehicles, located in Kansas City, Missouri, has received an additional federal grant for $22 million to cover expansion of operations.  The truck maker, which builds the Newton electric Class 5 delivery box van, plans to expand from 2 trucks per week (current) to 25 per week by the end of year by ramping up operations and doubling their workforce to 100 employees.

Smith Electric has orders from and has supplied trucks to several companies including Coca-Cola, Frito-Lay and Kansas City Power and Light.

The $22 million grant is from the Department of Energy as part of their new fuels for transportation initiative.  Smith received $10 million from the DOE last year to begin production of the Newton.
