DHL Hybrid Truck by Volvo Debuts in Britain

DHL is running trials on a new diesel electric hybrid truck made by Volvo as the world’s first 18-tonne hybrid distribution truck.  The truck is expected to reduce fuel usage by 15% while doing the same job as a conventional truck.  The truck is a series parallel, which means it can operate as a hybrid, as an all electric truck, or as both at the same time (using both the electric motor and the diesel engine in true diesel hybrid electric mode).

DHL and Volvo formed a partnership to jointly develop the vehicle and test it over a two year period.  Body maker DON-BUR also contributes, adding a drag resistant “teardrop” shaped body to lower wind resistance as the truck travels.

Unveiled at Hatfield, the new truck will operated in and around London on regular delivery routes.  The truck operates all electric for up to 15km/h (about 7mph) and uses regenerative braking to further boost its efficiency.
