Fjord1 and Fiskerstrand to Build World Largest LNG-Powered Ferry

Norwegian transport company Fjord1 has penned a contract with Fiskerstrant BLRT AS to begin work on the world’s largest natural gas-powered ferry.

The ferry will operate on liquid natural gas (LNG) and will begin operations in Bokna Fjord at the end of November in 2011.  The ferry will have a total length of 129.9 meters, 19.2 meters at maximum width, and will have a capacity of 242 cars and/or 22 trucks plus cars.  The ferry will carry 600 total people (staff plus passengers) with a 1300 metric tonne deadweight.

The LNG engines will power electric motors which operate four azimuth thrusters to a speed of up to 20 knots.

Fjord1 already has other LNG-powered ferries, the first of which began operations in 2000 and is still the only company using natural gas ferries in Norway.  Fjord1 has several LNG ferries either in operation or on the way, with a total of 12 planned for operation in Norway by the end of 2011.
